Heat & dehydration risk

Heat hits harder with kidney disease.

Impaired temperature regulation and common medications (diuretics, ACE inhibitors, ARBs) raise the risk of dehydration and acute kidney injury in hot weather.

Prescribed a fluid limit? Don’t increase your fluid intake automatically — follow the individualized guidance from your clinician, and ask how heat changes your limit.

Kidney care that stays on the east side

Our office is on Woodforest Blvd near the I-10 and Beltway 8 interchange — reachable from Channelview, Galena Park, Denver Harbor, the Fifth Ward, Crosby and the Lake Houston area without driving into the Texas Medical Center for every follow-up.

Same-week appointments

New patients are usually seen within one to two weeks, with same-day slots often available for urgent kidney or blood-pressure concerns — so you are not waiting weeks to be seen.

Kidney disease is usually silent. If you have high blood pressure or diabetes, a kidney check is two tests — a blood test that estimates filtration (eGFR) and a urine test for albumin. Ask your clinician whether they belong in your next round of labs, or ask about a kidney check in Houston.

These are population estimates, not case counts, and they do not diagnose disease or determine whether anyone needs kidney care.

Local care details

Getting care in Houston.

Storm & hurricane readiness

Gulf Coast weather is a real consideration when you have kidney disease, and the east side floods first. If you have CKD and are not yet on dialysis, a little preparation before hurricane season goes a long way — keep an up-to-date medication list and your most recent labs somewhere you can grab quickly, keep enough blood-pressure medication on hand to cover several days if pharmacies close, and know your warning signs (new swelling, shortness of breath, a sharp drop in urination) and who to call if you cannot reach the office. Patients already on dialysis should follow their dialysis center's emergency plan for treatment scheduling, since missed sessions carry more risk than a delayed office visit.

Labs & imaging

Most kidney care runs on lab work, and there is a Quest Diagnostics location close to the office, so a draw does not mean a separate trip across town. LabCorp and hospital outpatient labs work equally well — what matters is that your results reach Dr. Khosla before your visit, so decisions are made on current numbers rather than repeated tests. Imaging done elsewhere, such as a kidney ultrasound, can usually be reviewed rather than redone.

Dialysis nearby

If dialysis ever enters the conversation, it does not have to mean leaving the east side. Dr. Khosla covers DaVita — Jacinto on Market Street, minutes from the office, so treatment can stay close to home if care ever progresses that far. For most patients seen early the goal is the opposite — slowing kidney decline enough that dialysis stays a distant possibility rather than a near-term plan.
