The Role of Injections in Pain Management

Pain management injections — epidural steroids, joint injections, nerve blocks, RFA — deliver targeted relief when conservative treatment isn't enough.

Chronic pain may become a strain on all areas of life, both physical and emotional. Physical therapy or over-the-counter medications might not be sufficient to help many people. That is where injections are instrumental in managing pain. Injections can treat inflammation, numb painful nerves, and offer long-term relief by reaching the cause of the pain.

Why Injections Are Effective in Managing Pain

Injections are more effective compared to oral medications, which have to go through the digestive system to become effective. They address the cause of pain directly and more quickly. The primary advantages of pain management injections are:

  • Precision — The medicine is sent to the area where it is needed.
  • Speed — Patients tend to feel better much quicker than with oral therapies.
  • Fewer side effects — Since injections bypass the digestive system, they can result in fewer systemic side effects.
  • Better quality of life — Patients are able to remain active and participate in everyday life.

Common Pain Management Injections

1. Epidural Steroid Injections

Often used to treat back and neck pain related to herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or sciatica. Administered around the spinal nerves using anti-inflammatory medication, they help lessen nerve irritation and bring relief.

2. Joint Injections

Corticosteroid injections into the knee, shoulder, or hip reduce joint inflammation and enhance movement for patients with arthritis or joint discomfort.

3. Trigger Point Injections

Trigger points (muscle knots) can cause pain that spreads to other parts of the body. Trigger point injections loosen knotted muscles and reduce tension-induced pain.

4. Facet Joint Injections

Spinal facet joints may become inflamed and lead to back pain. Injections into these joints relieve pain and can help determine the origin of pain.

5. Nerve Blocks

Where chronic pain is caused by certain nerve fibres, nerve block injections can suppress the pain signals to the brain. Commonly used for migraines or neuropathy.

Injections are not always the initial line of management, but are a great alternative when conservative therapies have not provided adequate relief. They can be prescribed for:

  • Chronic back or neck pain
  • Joint pain associated with arthritis
  • Nerve compression or sciatica
  • Muscle pain and spasms
  • Pain after injury or surgery

Are Injections Permanent?

Although injections may achieve long-term relief, they are often used in combination with other treatments. Remix Medical incorporates injections alongside physical therapy, lifestyle changes, or regenerative medicine to treat both the symptoms and causes of pain. Injections serve as a bridge — providing sufficient relief to engage in rehab exercises or implement lifestyle changes that lead to long-term recovery.
